Anyone know the easiest/best way to remove a padlock
from an outside gate, where the key has been lost?

A dremell tool would work nicely, crowbar works too I think, big sledgehammer would do it as well, explosives work the easiest and produce some nice effects too.

Bolt cutters. Probably can rent a pair. If not, they are less than $50. Depends on how serious the lock is. A super duper case hardened with a guard on it would be difficult. Your standard Home Depot master lock will yield rather easily to a bolt cutter.
Here's a 24" model. 30" are better.

Is it on a hasp? If so, you might could cut through the hasp with a saws-all.
For that matter, if you have a sawz-all, you could cut the lock with a metal cutting blade.
Edited to add: More work lower cost = hack saw

I'm with warf... get some big bolt cutters and it'll be off in no time.

Do you have access to the screws? I've seen a few silly installs where the screws can be removed from the latch opening the fence.

I've done this and the sawz works wonders, provided you have enough blades, and goggles. But large bolt cutters would do nicely too.

If you have access to a side grinder that would work great, but this would work the best!
